TOO OLD TOO SOON?
Since we have looked into the case of underage smoking and drinking in Britain, we have found out that the UK is the third country in Europe in consumption of alcohol by teenagers. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health are wondering how teenagers are getting cigarettes and alcohol. On September the 24th 2013 they reported some shocking findings: “Teenagers must be getting their cigarettes and alcohol off their friends and family. Among students in Years 7-12 who smoked cigarettes, 58% say they received their last cigarette from a friend or family member, while 19% report getting them from a corner store, grocery store, gas station, or bar.”
The problems with underage smoking and drinking are affecting the behaviour of young people in all areas. With the behaviour getting worse this is making society unclean. With teenagers having bad behaviour from smoking and drinking, this is making people act silly, make bad decisions and it is having a detrimental effect on their health. Young people might think that any damage to their health caused by drinking lies so far in the future that it’s not worth worrying about. However, some studies show there has been a sharp increase in the number of people in their twenties dying from liver disease as a result of drinking heavily in their teens.
Children might think it’s clever to smoke and drink underage but really it’s not. It messes up your health and damages your immune system. For our teenage view on smoking and drinking we are interviewing Lewis and Owen.
One of the questions that Lewis and Owen answered was:
If your friends where smoking and drinking and it was badly effecting their health, would you help them?
“Yes, I would help my friends or family quit smoking or drinking too much. For me to help them I would give them support and as much advice as possible to try and stop”.
They went on to say that they don’t think there is an easy way to put a stop to it, it has been an issue for many years. It would be much better to advise young people about how do this safely and look after their bodies.
They listed the reasons why young people drink and smoke as: peer pressure, thinking it’s cool, and boredom.
