Have you done a no make-up selfie for cancer awareness? Females of all ages have been taking bare-faced selfies (#nomakeupselfie) for Cancer Research UK. The craze has seen numbers of women posting pictures of themselves wearing no make-up on social media sites then nominating friends to carry on the trend. The trend for women sharing pictures wearing no make-up and giving a donation to a Cancer charity has now raised millions for Cancer Research UK.
Over the last few weeks the awareness of people in the UK about Cancer charities has increased; Cancer Research UK now have 826,000 likes on Facebook also 140,000 followers on Twitter. British citizens have been removing all make-up and taking “selfies” to raise awareness for the unfortunate people suffering from cancer, then uploading the picture to a social media site: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter…
The ‘#nomakeupselfie’ craze has raised £8m for Cancer Research UK in six days. The people take a picture of themselves without make-up then upload the image showing their support before donating money to the Cancer Research Charity. The difference that the £8million has made to cancer sufferers is unbelievable, the charities can now fund 10 new clinical trials. This may sound like not a huge difference but to those cancer patients the ‘#nomakeup’ selfies have made them feel noticed, giving some a new lease of life!
It’s not just women; it’s men as well! Men are also getting involved in this craze with their own version: the man make up selfie. Men take pictures of themselves wearing make-up and post them on social network sites to raise money for prostate cancer charities.

Miss Harris, an English teacher at Culcheth High School, took a no make-up selfie. Miss Harris was nominated by a friend over Facebook and posted her photograph also showing her donation of £10 to Cancer Research UK. Miss Harris said it makes a difference because it raises money for the cancer patients while boosting their self-esteem.
Actress Kym Marsh posted a make-up free selfie for cancer awareness.
If there is anyone to thank for this development in cancer awareness it is the social media; without the amazing technology not half the donations would have been made. The cancer awareness no make-up selfies have gone viral, using social media, the money that the Cancer charities have raised is fantastic!
